  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 squirts of green gel food coloring
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup full-fat cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Electric Green Gel Food Coloring
  • Black Gel Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then add eggs one at a time.
  3. Mix in the dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk and oil until combined. Stir in food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for about 28 minutes. Cool completely on wire racks before frosting.
  5. For the cream cheese buttercream, beat together butter and cream cheese until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and mix well.
  6. Assemble by leveling the cooled cakes, spreading buttercream between layers, and frosting the entire cake.
